Who We Are

Animals Taiwan is a group of people, both expat and local, concerned about the welfare of animals in Taiwan, in particular that of the stray population. We work to raise awareness of the stray problem and of the responsibilities of pet ownership. We rescue sick, injured, and young strays, rehabilitate them, vaccinate them, desex them, then try to find them permanent, caring homes. To date we have helped over four hundred animals in this way, many of whom, on veterinary assessment, were given little—if any—chance of survival. AnimalsTaiwan believes in giving every animal the chance of a life without suffering, however small that chance may be.

Our Future Goals

Realising that we can help but a limited number of animals this way, AnimalsTaiwan’s goal for the future is to set up CNR (Catch-Neuter-Return) projects around the island. CNR involves catching the strays, treating them, vaccinating them, desexing them, and returning them to the location they were found. This is the only method of stray-population control that works; it is also the most humane. We cannot do any of this without support — from people who care about the plight of the other animals that share this island we now call home.

What We Need

In simple terms what we really need is funding. Donations and funds received from other means whether big or small, they are all gratefully received and put to good use straight away, paying for vaccinations, life-saving operations, neutering operations, food, and the medical supplies for those in our care. We also need volunteers to give their time to help bake and sell our delicious dog biscuits, foster a needy dog or cat, help at our new facility, translate, dog-walk or fence-build. It all makes a difference.

Viba performs a live set of quirky electro-tinged house that has wowed audiences across the island. A modern one man band armed with drum machines and synthesizers controlled with an array of high tech devices.

With his debut album - East/West Relations - out on Bubble Bomb Records, and as the first artist to make money from downloads on the Dance-Industries website, Viba is certainly a rising star in the world of electronica. 2007 saw several commercial releases – featuring on an Onse plate compilation, the delightfully Chillful “Formosa” released on F4b Records, and the single release "Mad Hatter" on Ocean Drive Records in December. Moreover, several tunes from the debut album East-West Relations were licensed for use in pornographic films.

Hailing from England, he has a long pedigree in the scene, having been in keyboard bands since the late 80s and a stint DJing full time for a few years in the 90s.

Viba is a long time resident of Taipei.

INFLUENCES: I guess it all started when my father took me to watch Supertramp perform in London. As a 13 year old kid I was awestruck. Being a mere 19 years older than me, my father ( A Beatles fan) had already introduced me to Queen - A night at the Opera was my first album - and Genesis among others. I was soon going to concerts regularly. Over the next year or so I was taken to see ELO, Elton John and even Pink Floyd perform the Wall in London, and others. In my mid teens I was old enough to venture up to London town by myself or with friends and see countless acts. It was probably a good thing I wasn't with dad, for many reasons but, mainly because my own musical tastes were starting to develop. I morphed through heavy metal for a few years, but then turned my attention to the New- romantics in the early 80s. The likes of Japan, D Mode, Blancmange and Erasure remained anchored on my record player then. Somewhere during this time I bought my first synth – the now mightily famous SH 101. Cure, New Order, the Cult, Bauhaus brought a new style of Indie to my senses - too many to mention but The The, Carter USM, Sugarcubes, Waterboys, Killing Joke, Bjork, Cocteau twins, 4AD spring to mind. Chime by Orbital was the first "Techno" record I bought and it wasn't long until there was a whole new world of music to discover. The Brown Album remains close to my heart.

I think I have gone through just about all Electronic genres at one time or another but I have really enjoyed following the career of William Orbit and also enjoy NIghtmares on Wax. CJ Bolland BT Cosmic Baby Air to name a few. I discovered Brian Eno music about 5 years ago and finally became more familiar with classical pieces- I realize I am partial to a bit of Chopin or Debussy. More recently I have been listening to BOC and Sigor Ros. One artist that has stayed with me throughout though has been Kate Bush. To say she strikes a chord with me is an understatement. It is a fantastic journey that I only see becoming more intricate and fascinating.

When someone melodically declares,“I wanna show you the inside, so won't you come in", you listen.

This is the captivating and honest nature of Faye Blais, the singer/songwriter that has been seen swooning crowds from around campfires in Northern Ontario to the stages of Tawain for almost ten years.

Self-taught from an early age, Blais released her long-awaited debut "First Tooth” in 2005. The independent album, recorded at Hamilton's Crossfade Studios, characteristically resounds with upbeat odes to the greater things in life and gentle reflections upon her cross-country adventures.

Compared to the likes of Joni Mitchell and Canada's own Sarah Harmer, one reviewer noted that he will one day proudly boast,“I heard Faye Blais' first record before she was famous".

This Sudbury, Ontario native and world traveler has recently been leading the trio Faye & The Slacks around Taiwan. Accompanied by bassist Geoff North and percussionist Phil Patry, the group has garnered much attention overseas, considered as“one of Taichung's most energizing new bands".

In true Faye Blais fashion, the future should include more travels abroad and a possible return to her roots. Next stop: Australia and Canada.

In business for several years, NationWide is the oldest active foreign run computer service in Taiwan. Customer satisfaction rate is nearly 100%, and they pride themselves in what they do as well as stand by their warranties and our word.

Founded 5 years ago by a Canadian who had enough of local markets and miscommunication with sales people and being ripped off by other ex-pats out to make a quick buck at another' products services

NationWide boasts an assortment of RMA hardware and software testing tools mostly found in RMA or R&D departments of hardware production plants like those of Asus, Gigabyte and Corsair. This assures the customer of component specific repair or replacement and not just swapping out components one at a time till the problem area is found (Costing the customer thousands of dollars in replacements and repairs.

They spend thousands of dollars on equipment each year so their customers don't have to. Technician and administrators' certifications include degrees in Computer Sciences, COMPTIA, Microsoft, Sun, Cisco Systems and Linux among others. They service PCs and Macs and also provide on-site tech support for home and small office networks (this includes most server builds).

Prices are competitive and service is far and away above that of any competition. In the Taipei area, all new computers are delivered and setup by a certified technician. The technician doesn't leave until the customer is satisfied with their understanding and familiarity of their new computer system. Future services will include "How to" seminars for both hardware and software sold, among others.

The Armory was originally Du Mei's family home. In the middle of the night in March 1995, a fire broke out next door to the Armory which left the building severely damaged. Mr Liang Hong, Professor Wong and a team of volunteers from Cheng Gung University redesigned and rebuilt the building into what we now know as The Armory.

The property at rear of The Armory which is now a free government car park, was during the Min and Chin dynasty an army barracks. During the Japanese occupation an Armory was added (the origin of the pub’s name). After the Hong Kong handover in 1997 the Army base was closed down and demolished. This gave an opportunity for a little midnight shopping for building material (with permission from the site manager of course!).

During their period of occupation of Taiwan (1895-1945) the Japanese were responsible for the systematic cutting down of the now rare Taiwan oak. The 10,000 year old plus trees were cut down for building material. Yes, that’s right, these enormous, majestic trees were cut down to build houses and government buildings. Cutting them down was bad enough, but to hide the beautiful wood under paint or inside a wall was criminal. Who knows how much of this wood is still buried inside walls around Taiwan, or worse still, destroyed. At least some of it can be seen around the Armory not really a fitting end to the life of these ancient trees, but better than ending up as landfill. A small slide show of the rebuilding can be seen next to the book case on the second floor.

Over the years the Armory has been involved with countless art shows, charity events and community services for both the local and foreign communities. One of the main objectives of the Armory over the years has been bringing Ex-pats and local people together in a friendly environment. The Armory has been responsible for countless friendships, relationships and associations. The Armory supplies a location for people to show their art, D.J skills and a venue for up and coming bands. Also sponsorship of magazines, sporting events, Phoenix soccer team and many others. Under the loving guidance of the one constant influence, Du Mei, The Armory has become a second home for many people from all walks of life.

In 2003 the Armory under went a renovation with the addition of new management to bring it more up to date, including; increasing the floor space, bar extensions, live satellite TV, two projector screens and a functioning bar on the first floor. A new cook has transformed the food menu with the addition of new: traditional Taiwanese, vegetarian and western dishes that caters to most tastes. The addition of a bar manager, Rocky whose dedication and personality has been invaluable to the success of the bar.

Tainan: Second Hand Store

There is a large second-hand store on Chunghua Road in Tainan selling a wide variety of items ranging from furniture, kitchen appliances, decorative items, tools, games, and well just about anything you can think of. Except clothing.

Service is friendly and they take the time to discuss your questions.

Most items are labelled with prices, but haggling is definitely in order.

More Coffee is a 24 hour Coffee Shop cum Internet Cafe cum Comic Book Library located near the Tainan Train Station. It consists of two floors, with the coffee shop on the first floor and net cafe and comic books on the second.
